Doward Park Campsite is located in the Wye Valley near Symonds Yat – between Ross-on-Wye and Monmouth.
The site is surrounded by woodland in a designated "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty". The river, the forest and Symonds Yat are all within walking distance. A short stroll from the site and you can be in King Arthur's Cave – or sat on top of the Seven Sisters Rocks. There is a cyclepath from Symonds Yat East to Monmouth along the track of the old Wye Valley Railway, this is easily reached from the track which runs past the campsite down to the Biblins suspension bridge.
Yat Rock - with its fantastic view, and Peregrine Falcons can be reached either by crossing the Biblins bridge and walking along the river to Symonds Yat East or by walking down through the woods (past the old Iron Ore mines) to either of the two rope ferries across the river that are run by the Saracen's Head and the Olde Ferrie Inne.
A short drive takes you to Goodrich and Raglan Castles, or Tintern Abbey. The County Town of Hereford is 17 miles, Monmouth 4 miles and Ross 8 miles.
Canoes are available for hire locally for either a short excursion or a longer half-day or full day adventure along the beautiful Wye Valley.
The south facing terraced site makes the most of the sun, and is completely surrounded by woodland (most of which has free public access). Deer are frequently seen early morning and late evening, along with the occasional badger and fox. Buzzards and occasionally falcons circle overhead. The site has its own fenced woodland, which is ideal for children to play in and make camps – without the fear of getting lost. As we permanently live on site security is very good.
Site Facilities: Free Hot Showers, toilets, washing up room, hairdryer in ladies showers, free ice pack freezing, chemical toilet disposal point and battery charging. The reception cabin houses a small shop selling a range of basic items plus ice creams, sweets, and hot & cold drinks. Full Calor and Camping Gaz exchange facilities now available. A tumble dryer & washing machine is also available for campers (charge applies). The nearest shop is a Spar (1 1/2 miles). For a wider range of provisions Monmouth is only 4 miles away.
We cater for all forms of tent camping from one-man back-packers to trailer tents, electric hook-up pitches also available. We can take motorcampers up to 23ft long (we now have four hardstandings for motorcampers) however we are not able to take touring caravans. We only have 27 pitches in total – so booking is advisable to avoid disappointment.
We are often asked if there is a pub serving food within walking distance.... the answer is yes, there are three - however bear in mind that whilst they are only about 1 1/4 - 1 1/2 miles away - they are all on the river and that is 100 metres lower than the campsite. The nearest can be walked to in about 25 minutes. The shortest routes are not suitable for pushchairs, but there are alternative (but longer) easier routes. They are delightful walks, with an abundance of wildlife and caves to spot on the way, and you certainly feel that you have earned your pint / meal when you arrive. One of them has a shortcut across the river via a rope ferry! If you prefer to drive then it only takes about 5 minutes.
The site has been inspected by the AA in 2006 and has been upgraded to a Three Pennant site.
